Reading nicotine figures correctly: mg per gram and mg per pouch

Siberia -80° White Dry Red Slim

The product pages at siberia.eu give nicotine figures in two different units: some brands state milligrams per gram, others milligrams per pouch. Both figures are correct, but they answer different questions. Anyone who mixes them up is comparing apples and oranges. This article explains both units and uses examples from the product range to show how to interpret them.

Two units, two questions

mg/g: the concentration

The figure in milligrams per gram describes how much nicotine is contained in one gram of pouch contents. It does not depend on how large the individual pouch is. A Mini and a Regular of the same line therefore have the same figure in mg/g. The concentration is something like a characteristic of the recipe.

mg per pouch: the amount per portion

The figure in milligrams per pouch describes how much nicotine is contained in a single portion. It depends on two things: the concentration and the weight of the pouch. Two pouches with the same concentration but different sizes therefore end up with different values per pouch.

How the two figures are related

The relationship is a simple multiplication:

mg per pouch = mg/g × weight of one pouch in grams

It follows that if you only know the concentration but not the pouch weight, you cannot determine the amount per pouch exactly. And if you only know the amount per pouch, you still know nothing about the concentration. Pouch weight follows no uniform standard; it differs by brand and format.

Example 1: Oden's with both figures

Oden's Cold Extreme White Dry is one of the few products in the shop for which both values are stated. This makes it a good way to show the relationship:

The concentration is the same; the Slim pouch is smaller and therefore contains less nicotine per portion. Exactly this pattern also applies to other brands with several formats.

Example 2: Siberia, mg/g only

Siberia states the concentration: 43 mg/g for Red and Black, 24 mg/g for Blue. For Siberia, there is no per-pouch figure on the product pages. For you, this means:

  • You can compare the lines directly: Red and Black have the same concentration, Blue a lower one.
  • Between the formats of one line, the direction from Example 1 applies: Mini contains less per pouch than Slim, Slim less than Regular, at the same concentration.
  • An exact figure per pouch cannot be derived without the pouch weight.

Example 3: VID, mg per pouch only

VID takes the opposite approach and states the amount per pouch: 12 mg for VID Medium, 20 mg for VID Strong, each in White Slim format with 20 pouches per can. No concentration in mg/g is given. Comparing VID with Siberia is therefore only possible to a limited extent: the two figures have different units and cannot simply be put side by side.

Common misconceptions

  • “Same number, same amount.” Not necessarily. 20 mg per pouch and 20 mg/g are two different statements.
  • “Tobacco-free means a lower dose.” In the product range, that is not the case: Cuba, Garant and Iceberg are at 43 mg/g and above.
  • “The name tells you the strength.” Additions such as “Extreme” or “Strong” are the manufacturer's designations. Oden's Cold Extreme, for example, at 22 mg/g is below Siberia Red at 43 mg/g.
  • “Smaller pouch, lower concentration.” The concentration stays the same across all formats of a line; only the amount per pouch changes.

Summary

  • mg/g describes the concentration, mg per pouch the amount per portion.
  • The two are linked by the pouch weight, which differs by brand and format.
  • Only compare figures with the same unit.
  • Within a line, the format changes the amount per pouch, not the concentration.
